Foreword
C.C.H.S. to the oiitsitler stands for Central Catholic High School.
Hut, to all true Centralites — faculty and students — our initials,
in addition, embody four characteristic marks of a lover of Christ.
For us these letters connotate Charity — or love of God and neighbor ;
Courage — the strength to meet and carry out the needs of a large
Catholic coed high school ; Honesty — fairness in every encounter
with our fellowman ; Sanctity — the grace to mirror Christ in our¬
selves and to encourage others to become His reflection.
Signed with the seal of Central we are set ai)ait not liom <jui
lellowmen — but for our fellowmen. Fvery class, every activity,
every engagement met at Central has imprinted deeper into our
characters these four letters so that we may step into a grossly mate¬
rialistic world and make the presence (d Christ felt.
As we watch a new wing aligning itself to the old we reali/,e that
the ideals imjdanted in us are soon to be offereil to many more youth.
They with us can say
" liaild me itxihjhi, Ok ivo/lky ISlastn ,
Strong and true a goodly vessel.”

Dedication
KUrht years ago Eishop Alter appointed Father Harrington principal
of Central Catholic High School. A more fitting choice could not
have been made.
"I'he spiritual and intellectual welfare of the student body have
always been his primary concern and his ardent interest in the school
has enabled Central to achieve an e\ en more outstanding place among
the high schools of the city.
His deep appreciation ol the problems ol youth has inspired the
greatest confidence in him on the jiart of each individual student who
has tndy found in him the great (jualities of both Father and Friend.
A new wing is now being constructed under his watchful eye.
His desire to give Central’s educational advantages to more of the
voiith of 'Foledo and the outlying districts wall soon he materialized
with the completion of this addition.
As students ol CVntral C’atholic High we hold him in highest
esteem, and as the grateful recipients ol the educational advantages
he has striven to provide, we dedicate this, the I‘f4‘f Centripetal,
to him.

Courage. Tlie value of this mark is soon realized by
a CCHS student. Its necessity becomes apparent as
the Centralite faces the daily classroom routine;
obeys all rules; learns to co-operate with his fellow
classmates. This accomplishment requires a courage
which never allows him to give up and which grows
stronger as the cherished goal of four years well
spent draws nigh.

YOUTH OF CFNTRAI.
( 1 uscriptioii in C’cntral’s Lobby)
Yotirh of Central, lad or lass, learn here
The ways of wisdom, and unearth the hidden
(7enis of truth. For wisdom keeps the {^ams
Of justice and defends the portals of
^Fhe saints, while truth is worthier than wealth
And mightier than armies in the field.
Delve here for truth, as for a treasure-trove,
'I'hen, hind it to thy memory and lock
Rev. (1. \V. If. Dunne, Litt. D.

The casements of thy mind. To fear the Ford
Hut trims the lamp that leads to wisdom, and
Her ways are lovely ways and all her paths
Are peaceable. 'Fhen say to wisdom : Thou
Art mine, ami when thou walkest let her go
With thee, and when thou sleepest let her watch
With thee, and when thou walkest talk with her,
And write her words upon the tablets of thv soid.

Theodore Mangas
Died August 2, l!t4H
TfTT'OncORE AfANCiAS PARTSTT: ST. ACNF.S
All who knew Theodore, or “ l ed”, as he preferred to be called, liked
him. He was loved for his sterlinj^ character, his wit, and his untirinji:
devotion to anythinji; he undertook. As his classmates think hack over his
life only admirable traits come to mind. 'Ted desired to j^ive himself to
( iod as a Trappist following; his graduation this June. ( lod anticipated
this wish and claimed him early for His owm.
Barbara Nopper
Died June 28, 1948
P.ARRARA NOPPER PARISH; ST. MARY
Parbara, like ^Eed, was taken suddenly from her classmates and friends.
Those who associated with her, in fact all who knew her, loved her for
her friendliness and thoughtfulness. During her three years at Central
she, by her zeal in all activities, proved herself a true and loyal Centralite.
Marjorie Riley
Died June 28, 1948
MARJORIE RIEEY PARISH: OOOD SHEPHERD
The Master called Marjorie suddenly with her life-long friend Bar¬
bara. All who came in contact with Marjorie admired her for her fine
disposition, humor, and loyalty. Always ready with a smile she was
gifted with a rare personality that endeared her to all her acquaintances.
Marjorie was keenly interested in all that pertained to Central.
Eternal rest f/rant unto them, () Lord, and let perpetual Ih/ht shine upon them.
i\lay they rest in Iware. /I men.

Religion
'rhe religion course is a great force in the formation of the
true Catholic Centralite. As an essential part of our education it
is carried into every phase of the day’s program. In this class we
learn not only the principles of our religion but also how to apply
this Icimwledge to our own lives.
The privilege of assisting at Holy Mass and receiving Holy
Communion daily is offered to every student. An annual Retreat
is scheduled for all, while a special Day of Recollection is set aside
tor the seniors. The many spiritual activities maintained through¬
out the year are climaxed by tbe May Convocation in the Spring.

English
Ability to recognize and use good English and the apprecia¬
tion of fine literature are the points stressed in the English class.
A three year requisite, this course offers the seniors a chance of either
literature, public speaking or journalism.
A detailed study of American Literature is emphasized in the
junior year while the English classics are stressed in the senior
schedule. The ability to speak correctly and at ease is acquired in
the public speaking classes, and the rudiments of newswriting are
perfected in the journalism course.

Spanish
With the world conditions as they are today there is immediate need of peace
among nations. Two effective means of acquiring this peace are knowing and under¬
standing the religion and language of a country. As common worship of (lod brings
about unity and harmony among people so common language makes for deeper under¬
standing of the peoples using it.
Students of Spanish attempt to achieve a better understanding of the Spanish
speaking world through a knowledge of this language. Along with familiarity with
the tongue of the Central and South Americans will come a de:ire to know why
they think and act as they do. This cra\ ing to understand others will strengthen the
bonds of peace among nations.

Although the study of the language itself is the most important phase of the
course, the singing of French songs, the reading of the French paper La Croisade, and
the enjoyment of French plays help the students understand the French and their
motle of life.

sympathetic understanding of the culture and of the ideals of these people who have
suffered so much from World War 11.
Since music is consitlereil the basic art of Ciermany, the students spend many
periods studying and enjoying the various folk songs of this people.

Latin
The enthusiastic acceptance of the study and work in Latin is due in no small measure to the
ideals placed before the students in their approach to the subject. '^I'he thought of the holy priesthood,
the medical doctor, pharmaceutical work, law and other vocations open to them avenues and ideals for
which to strive.
Yearly, in March, Central Catholic High enters the National Competitive Contest sponsored
by the Association for the Promotion of the Study of Latin and every student of Latin participates.
This contest is on the approved list of National Contests by the National Association of Secondary
School Principals.
Every student participating in this contest can become a medal winner, provided he merits 116
to 120 points in the test which has a maximum of 120 points. For every three medals earned by
individual students, the school is presented with a trophy. Last year Central Catholic High School
had six Medal Winners; one senior, two juniors and three sophomores.

From early morn ’til late at nifrht there is one room in the
school that is truly a busy place. During the school year, Central’s
library is a veritable storehouse of information from which the
student body draws aid for daily assignments, research papers and
also enjoyable leisure moment reading.
The upperclassment find it an oasis of knowledge in a desert of
ignorance when the formal essay, the history contest or the book

these students.
The magazines, pamphlets and books housed in the library
offer much help to the faculty as well as to the student body.

Mathematics
In this, the era of science, the department of mathematics furnishes instructions
in the most fundamental and basic science.
Through the four year course given at Central the math student progresses
from the fundamentals of first year algebra and plane geometry to the more ex¬
tensive advanced algebra, solid geometry, and trigonometry.
He, moreover, acquires, though he may not realize it at first, the ability to think
logically, a result of his daily practice in carrying a given datum to an inevitable
conclusion.
Thus, mathematics instills the student with both a practical and a somewhat
intangible but useful education.

sophomore year, along with machine detail, gearing and cam design.
With these fundamentals the junior applies himself to a project,
perhaps an airplane, an automobile or the various types combustion
motors.
The final year is devoted to the study of civil engineering.
Combining his mastery of trigonometry and drafting, the senior
gathers his data from the field and then computes the required dis¬
tances, areas, or volumes, and draws his problem to scale.
Without a doubt the drafting department of Central Catholic
High School is unparalleled by any other high school in the country.

Commercial
“Accuracy, speed, and production” is the often repeated slogan of the Commercial Department as
it prepares students to meet the requirements of the business world.
In Office Practice, training is given in the use of ediphone, electric typewriter, listing machine,
and calculators.
Bookkeeping students are taught the fundamentals of accounting together with duties required by
business.
In first year typing, mastery of the keyboard is emphasized, while in the second year the fine points
of job technique are stressed.
The aim of the shorthand classes is rapid reading, perfect penmanship, the building of the tran¬
scription rate and phrasing.
The study of commercial law stimidates the interest of the students m everyday personal, so¬
cial, and business application of law.
Commercial Georgraphy enables the students to carry out the activities of government in meeting
the problems of national, state, and local welfare.
Civics develops an understanding of current events and problems and encourages sound social

“Education must take the future into account, but it should prepare for the
future by teaching how to live a rich life in the present.” 'Ehis is a motto which
those students who take Home Economics constantly practice.
These Centralites become acquainted with food nutrition, clothing and good
grooming, homemaking, homefurnishing, home nursing, family and social relationship.
Leisure time activities are stressed and students learning this course are capable
of using this time for helpful recreational purposes. Forming good habits is also
stimulated in the minds of these pupils.
Homemaking is definitely taught, and everyone should know that the clues to
successful living are truthfulness, honesty, fair play, cooperation, self control, charity,
courtesy, and creative thinking.

Honesty, the third mark, is linked with sports. This
character letter marks the student as an honest law-
abiding citizen. Where but on the gridiron, the
basketball floor, tbe bleachers is this idea of fair
play and justice — the ability to win humbly and
lose graciously — better learned? Participation in
sports affords one of the simplest means of acquiring
the imprint of the seal of honesty.

COACH PATRICK McCARTY
Al'HLETlC DIRECTOR AND HEAD FOOTBAEL COACH
Air. AlcCarty directed the Irish to one of the most successful years in Central’s
history. This year marked Air. AlcCarty’s fifth at the helm of Irish sports and it
proved to be a fruitful one. I'he basketball team was state runner-up and his foot¬
ball team won seven out of ten games against some of State’s best elevens.
COACH LAWRENCE BONDY — BASKETBALL COACH
Little needs to be said concerning the accomplishments of Air. Bondy. Each
year his teams are getting better. In his first year as basketball mentor, the Irish
captured the City runner-up crown. Last year his charges were Regional Runners-
Up and this year State Runners-lJ p. What next, little man?
COACH PAUL O’ROURKE — FRESHAIAN AIENTOR
Air. O’Rourke, a 1938 graduate of Central, has been freshman football and
basketball coach for three years.
In 1937 he played on Central’s championship basketball team. From Central
he enrolled at Dayton University where he played tackle. In the 1942 season he
was on the Dayton team that won eight of ten games.
Here at Central, as freshman coach, he has had two city champs in football
and his basketball team has never been below third place in city standings.

JOK KWIA'I'KOWSKI — All City
(second stiing). Joe specialized in
blocking kicks and recovering fumbles.
Ilis fighting spirit aiul tricky play
against his bigger opponents served as
.'111 inspiration to his teammates.
DONALD DARl'P— I'here are no
complaints against Don, who fought
ever\ minute for his team. His ac¬
curacy in centering the ball was great,
as was also his sense of humor.
JOHN RASTER— All City (second
string). Much may be said about our
‘‘Most Valuable Player.” His duties
of a blocking (piarterback were the
most ably iierformeil in the city.
RONALD KAMINSKI — Fast and
fearless Ronnie ^vill be a great loss
to the Irish next vear. His end-runs
were good for many a touchdown.
JOHN INCORVAIA — Combining his
size with his ability at the tackle spot
made this sophomore hard to stop.
Hl’CH EHRSAM — Hugh was handi¬
capped by his size, but always gave
his best. His desire to win made him
a good quarterback.
Page 92
TOM McHUCTI— This burly full¬
back plowed his way through many
opponents’ line to come through when
the going was tough. “Olaf” will re¬
turn next year to aid the Irish back-
field.
PATRICK MOORE— Due to injuries
to Pat’s leg he was unable to play the
entire season. There will be great ex¬
pectations of him next year.
JOHN STOEPLER— John lived up to
all expectations of a good player for
he came through with a stifjiig, power¬
ful t\pe of ball playing in his guard
position.
DAN FARBROTHER— Dan’s magic
toe helped pull the team out of many
tight spots. This sophomore tackle is
figured upon to help lead the Irish for
two more years.
WILLIAM OLEESPEN — Bill was
good as an offensive and defensive
guard. His leading of interference
made the Irish end-runs most effective.
ROBERT RECKER— All City (first
string). Bob was called by many the
most shifty back in the city. Besides
this he was a number 1 defensive
player.
Page 93
KEN BROWN — Rough aiul ready was
this big guard’s motto. Ken will be
able to prove this the coming season.
JOE MANLEY — Using his power and
skill, Joe earned the title of a hard-
blocking ()ua rtcrback, as well as being
a good defensive clog.
JULIUS S Z A K O V I T S— “Socko”
fought hard in his position as a
tackle. His rough and ready play up
front helped to make the team click.
LEE SU'EER — Lee showed great abil-
it\ and the fighting Irish spirit in his
pla\-. His position at the tackle spot
will be hard to fill next year.
BILL URIPPIN — Plowing through all
opposition is what Bill excelled in.
More will be heard from him next
year.
BERNIE (’LINKER— Being consid¬
ered one of the city’s top punters is
only a sideline for Bernie who is also
known for his rugged line play.
Page 94
MIKE EANCjEL — Although mighty
Mike was small, his cleverness as a
halfback \vas a constant threat to the
opposing teams.
AE MARCHAL— All City (first
string). ‘‘Tex” has been called by
many the toughest end in the city be¬
cause of his ability to block and to take
out the opponent’s interference.
GERALD McCLOSKEY — During his
three years on the varsity football
team "Mac” has had the distinction of
being the team’s number one pass re¬
ceiver.
ED SCIIROEDER— Skilled in the art
of centering and also a deadly de¬
fensive player, this short, stocky sen¬
ior will be missed by the team.
JOHN SULLDE^N — W he n extra
yards were needed this shifty fullback
answered the call. Next fall John’s
running ability will be a great asset
to the team.

DON DONOHER, “Mickey”— Don
combined height, speed, and accuracy
to keep the Irish in the win column.
Returning next year he is a potential
high scorer which can make Central
again a State C'rown threat.
FRANK HIPP, “Hipp” — Fraiik started
playing this year on the varsity and
does his job under the backboards.
Although Frank hasn't seen much ac¬
tion when he’s in there he gets his
share of markers as well as rebounds.
I’OM McIlUClI, "Olaf”— In all the
games this junior substitute entered he
was in the scoring column. Olaf
places as a backboard man and has
gotten his share of rebounds. His
height will aid the Irish next year.
BOB FELIX, "Bibbles”— Sophomore
Felix has all the potentialities of an¬
other Hickey. His ability sparked by
accuracy has proved him at times too
much for the opposition to handle.
TED WILLIAMS, “Ted”— Another
tenth grader, Ted kept the Celts in
the game by getting off his feet under
both backboards. This lad is an all-
around cage star with the aggressive¬
ness which keeps the opposition on its
toes.
DICK McCLOSKEV, “Specs”— When
it comes to tipping artists Specs can
top ’em all. This defensive center not
only kept the opposition’s long shots
down to a minimum but dropped in
many of his own. Specs also kept the
fast break alive as well as effective.
i

AL MARCHAL, “Tex”— A1 received
the “best attitude” trophy for beintJ
a swell guy. I'his is our opinion of
one of the finest defensive players in
the business.
OENE HICKEY, "Big Hick”— Speed
isn’t everything with Clene on the re¬
ceiving end of the fast break as his
deception kept the opposition baffled
to the Irish tactics. The best descrip¬
tion of him came at Columbus when
a sports writer said, “He does every¬
thing so perfectly it doesn’t seem spec¬
tacular.”
CEORCE DONAH TE, "Big Ceorge”
— This junior hasn’t had much chance
to sparkle this year, but as defensive
forward his height helped build up
the Irish zone.
JOHN RASTER, “Max”— This sen¬
ior’s speed and dribbling ability
helped the Irish pull through many a
tight game, especially against Akron.
Johnny wasn’t much of a scoring ace
but he made up for it on defense.
JERRY McCLOSKEY, "Mac”— Jerry,
who had the distinction to be named
on the all-state first team, completed
most successfully his last season for
Central. Spectacular shooting, cool
headed passing, and controlling re¬
bounds brought fame to this six-foot-
t\vo eager.
BOB RECKER, “Carl”— Bob em¬
ployed experience and speed to pace
the Celts’ fast break. His long shots
often paved the way for a hard earned
victory.

Nineteen years ago tins athletic league was organized for the
purpose of developing leadership, promoting social as well as athletic
activities and the building of a sense of sportsmanship among the
girls.
Under the capable instruction and sui^er\ision of Mrs. Kurucz
and iVIiss Leonhardt the girls in their gym classes learn how to play
basketball, volley ball, tennis, and archery, along with their schedule
of calisthenics.
Basketball tournaments are held with the various Home Rooms

Through four years the idea that one must
sanctify himself before attempting to sanctify
another has been impressed on the student. The
formation of various organizations and clubs — the
SSC, YCS, Student Council — ^ are all created for
this purpose. These groups mingle with each other
in a holy atmosphere — implanting ideas that event¬
ually lead each student to a closer union with the
Divine Master.

Student Spiritual Council
I'he name ol^ this organization bespeaks its purpose. It alms to
call to the students’ attention the fact that in a few short years they
will be a power for good or evil in the community in which they live.
Their higher education and training will cause them to assume lead¬
ing roles in parish and civic activities. The good that they will
accomplish in such positions will be incalculable but only the students
who carry out the aims of this Council can hope to wield this in¬
ti' lence.
Included in the Council are the St. John Berchmans Society, the
Kucharistic-iVIarian Committee, the Literatuie Committee, the Apos-

Band
Many long hours of practice, both in the band room and on the campus, are experienced by our red and gray
clad musicians. The results of their efforts, seen and heard at the various games, assemblies, May Day Convoca¬

of the school year — class news, sports, unusual sidelines — in
the spirit of Catholic journalism, forms the busy task of the

The annual is intended to be a review of the events of the entire year, and serve
as a remembrance, but at the same time be a complete pictorial record of every mem¬
ber of the school — students, faculty, executives, and officials. As a result, the Centri¬

I This ad has nothing whal-so-ever to do
i with jumping catfish but rather with ortho-
I pedic shoe work.
I You may not need special shoe work
I yourself but you no doubt have a friend
I or friends who do. You, too, no doubt have
I heard them complain about not knowing
I where they can get this type of work done.
I Here is your opportunity to be of help.
I Jot down this address and keep it on hand.

[ They See Every Play —
I Through Thermopane!*
I Thermopane insulating glass — two or
I more panes with a sealed air space
I between — serves thousands of home
i owners in Picture Windows and other
i sash. Recently, more and more schools
1 have specified Thermopane units for
1 press boxes in stadiums.
I Since Thermopane minimizes frost and
I condensation, games get better press
I coverage because reporters can see
I every play even in crisp cold weath-
I er. A Thermopane-enclosed box also
I is quieter for sportswriters covering a
1 game.
i Thermopane is readily available for
i all types of glazing. If more informa-
i tion is desired, write for your copy of
I our Thermopane book. Libbey-Owens-
